Manny Ramirez joined an elite club Saturday as he became the 24th player to hit 500 home runs with a shot against the Orioles. His home run came in the 7th inning off Baltimore reliever Chad Bradford. It was quite a moment to see with all the flash-bulbs and multitude of Red Sox fans who came to the Yard.
Although we were on the wrong side of history -- again -- nevertheless, it was quite a moment to see.
Last night, the Dodgers and Phillies played game one of the NLCS and everything came down to a fateful sixth inning. Los Angeles went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning, thanks to Manny Ramirez -- again -- with an RBI double; thereafter, Blake DeWitt plated Matt Kemp with an RBI.
Derek Lowe had things in control in the sixth inning; however, Shane Victorino reached base on a error off Rafael Furcal, and the Chase Utley homered to tie the game. Two batters, Pat Burrell hit his third homer of the postseason -- a two-run shot -- to make the difference. Cole Hamels was shaky in the first, but kept things in order with yet another post-season start for the victory. Lowe was good, but his two mistakes -- homers to Utley and Burrel -- cost them the win.
Like I said, if the Dodgers fall 2-0 in the series, it will be hard for them to come back. It was a very well played game yesterday night in the City of Brotherly Love, and I expect the same tonight in Beant! own as the Red Sox and Rays begin their series.
I see Boston taking this series in six games and here's why -- Jon Lester and Josh Beckett. Lester has been an inspirational story -- whether you care for the Red Sox or not -- and has become a a hell of a pitcher, and Beckett, I think will bounce back.
If you add to that the fact that the Red Sox just seem to have that killer instinct about them -- Tampa might find themselves done.
A lot of people are discounting Tampa because of their experience, or lack thereof; however, let's not forget what division they played in -- the AL East. They used to the wild atmosphere of sold-out Fenway, considering they have played there 9 times in 2008, plus if you add Yankee Stadium in the mix, Tampa has played in a pressure-cooker place 18+ times.
They'll be fine.
I think Tampa is more athletic, and maybe even better than the Red Sox on paper, but a lack of a true ace may cost them the ! series.
Then again, anything can happen in the play! offs.

Before I go, I'll say I'm not all that impressed by the playoff coverage on TV at all.
Sometimes, I'd rather just watch the TV in silence and then get analysis on the internet, because frankly, I'm not liking what I am watching.
We all know about Tim McCarver and Joe Buck (last night was McCarver ever negative against Manny -- perhaps even rightfully so), but I am not a fan of the bells and whistles that Fox has; thus, I prefer TBS' coverage -- but not by much.
TBS seems to just labor through the playoffs and their analysis; however, they sick to the meat and potatoes rather than go into endless prattle. The studio show is actually rather dull, and not all that insightful; however, I did really enjoy seeing Curtis Granderson on the tube -- ok, LCD TV -- but everyone else I could have fallen asleep on.
The Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves were also in competition for him; however, Baltimore didn't want to give Burnett the years he wanted and also were not a viable option for him as winning served to be important a factor.
The deal with New York is for five years, 82.5 million dollars.
Burnett may turn out to be Carl Pavano II -- ok, it may be a stretch -- but ! his history should be enough to give anyone a pause; alas, that's obviously not the case. It looks like A.J. was good enough and also healthy at the right time to get the chance to make even more money.
I guess he got the money and the years he wanted.

This afternoon, ESPN's Keith Law came out with his 100 top prospects list, and guess who was his top pick: Matt Wieters. As most fans of the black and orange know, Matt Wieters is one of the important pieces of the future with the Baltimore Orioles and the overwhelming majority of the media have been praising him since the day he was drafted.
If you don't have ESPN Insider, here's a bit of what Law has to say about Wieters:
Wieters is typically compared to one of two current big-leaguers: Mark Teixeira and Joe Mauer. Those are tough comps to hang on a player who has yet to sniff the big leagues, but in Wieters'! case, they're merited.
Wieters' similarities to Teixeira don't end with their common alma mater of Georgia Tech or the fact that each was selected with the fifth overall pick (Teixeira in 2001, Wieters in 2007). Like Teixeira, Wieters is a switch-hitter with plus hit and power tools from both sides. He's a little more fluid from the left side with slightly better raw power, but he could stand on his head and still be short to the ball and get good extension on his follow-through. His plate discipline is strong and improving, and he's filled out since college, adding power to the point where he's at least major league average right now. He does glide a little bit on both sides, but it has no discernible effect on his ability to hit.

It looks like some heads will definitely roll in Washington D.C. not for anything political, related to the economy or for anything else other than yet another baseball scandal. It's going to be interesting how this team handles this situation considering the amount of money given to a prospect -- a whopping $1.4 million -- who suddenly aged four years and who is someone else all together.
I smell a conspiracy -- a big one. For a franchise looking to gain credibility among the national media and it's fanbase, this has to sting.
Seeing "Baltimore" or the road uniforms last night on MASN was a wonderful thing, and what was even better is that they beat the Rangers, 10-9. Many people -- fans and those in the media (WNST especially) -- have been waiting for this night for years now, and it finally came on Monday.
In a game that resembled a roller-coaster or better yet a summer beer league softball game, Baltimore gave Koji Uehara ample run support to win his second major league game; however, he was not good at all as he gave up seven runs against a Texas team that can slug with the best of them.
The Orioles had 16 hits -- a high on the brief season so far -- and Aubrey Huff led the way for Baltimore with a 4-for-5 night with three runs driven in. Nick Markakis and Ty Wiggington each had two runs driven in, while Brian Roberts went 2-for-! 5. Felix Pie finally broke out as he hit his home run as a member of the Baltimore franchise. He too had three hits, but still looked very, very shaky in left field defensively.
Yesterday, Thursday was huge, not only because they won, but because a trade was made that could impact the future of the Baltimore Orioles. I'll speak briefly about the game, and onto the trade.
Bergesen (7-5) went seven innings on the afternoon and got the win, but had to leave the game because he got drilled by a Billy Butler liner that got him on his left shin. Matt Wieters – who was catching – snared the ball and threw out Butler, but Bergesen was hurt and after leaving the mound, he would collapse in the dugout.
At the en! d of the day, Bergesen didn't break his leg – which is great – and is still ailing with swelling on his leg. One would think he would skip his next start to recuperate.
The Baltimore offense jumped on Kansas City starter Luke Hochevar (who took the loss and is 6-4) early as Ty Wigginton hit a solo shot – his seventh – to give them an early 1-0 lead. They busted open in the fifth as the Orioles scored four times off a Nick Markakis RBI-single, and then Aubrey huff had a three-run double.
The Orioles pounded the Royals some more as took a 7-0 lead in the sixth inning thanks to a Brian Roberts RBI-double and a Felix Pie RBI-single.
Kansas City finally scored in the seventh off a David DeJesus RBI-single, and scored twice more in the eighth off a Joe Buck two-run homer – his 4th of the season.
John Tortorella put the team through their first practice together this morning, it lasted about 45 minutes.
Obviously it was the first time that the media got to talk with Tortorella since he took over the team last night so there was a 25-minute media gathering with Tortorella where he had some interesting quotes. Taken from Ranger Rants:
In regards to the power play and penalty kill, Tortorella said:
I'm going to give Schoney the penalty killing and he's going to handle the D during the games and I'm going to do the power play. I think it's important that the head coach has the power play. You're dealing with a lot of your top people and I think that's an important aspect of a head coach, getting the most out of your top people. You get to converse with them, they see the game differently than the coach does. Obviously if we're going to win it's going to have to produce.
This is very different from the way that Renney coa! ched, because Perry Pearn was responsible for the most part for handing the Rangers horrible power play.
Tortorella also made it clear that he would not be roleing four lines, he said ""Your best players need to be your decision makers and be given every opportunity to win hockey games for us." I hope this doesn't mean that Colton Orr becomes a healthy scratch on a regular basis. Over the course of the season so far, the Rangers fourth line has probably been their most consistent line. Betts and Sjostrom are arguably the best penalty killing duo in the league and you know every night that Colton Orr is going to do what he does best if needed (a top 5 fighter in the NHL).
Yesterday the rumor was that the Rangers had agreed on a contract with Tortorella but there was a hold up because Tampa wanted compensation for Tortorella who was still under contract with Tampa until June. It now appears that the holdup was a clause that Mike Sullivan (Tampa Assistant! coach) has in his contract, which stipulates that he has the ! option o f being John Tortorella's assistant if Tortorella becomes a coach for another NHL team. It now appears that Tortorella wanted Sullivan to come to NY and be one of his assistants but the Lightning wouldn't allow it, so Jim Schoenfiled said that he would take over that position for the remainder of the season.

The Rangers won their third straight game tonight, their seventh in the past n! ine games. Going into the third period up 4-1 it looked like it was going to be an easy two points for the Rangers, but give the Sabres credit, they battled hard in the third period right up until Ryan Callahan scored an empty net goal with 25 seconds left in the game to make it 5-3. The Rangers got goals from four different forwards (Naslund, Drury, Callahan & Zherdev) and Henrik Lundqvist made 37 saves to pull four points away from the 9th place Florida Panthers (who lost tonight to Columbus).
New York is now one point behind the Hurricanes (who won tonight) but the Rangers have played two games less and are now just two points behind the 5th place Pittsburgh Penguins who have also played a game more than the Rangers.
Tonight's game was physical as expected, with the feistiness starting in the first minute when Gomez was bumped by Lydman that sent Gomez to the ice and Zherdev skated right over to Gomez's defense. That was followed up by Sean Aver! y going over to Lydman and challenging him, all within the fir! st few s hifts of the game. Markus Naslund scored his 22nd goal of the season midway through the first and the Rangers left the 1st period with a 1-0 lead.
Early in the second period Chris Drury had a beautiful deflection while standing in front of the net on the Power Play that put the Rangers up 2-0. But, just 27 seconds later the Sabres scored to pull back within a goal. Just a few minutes later, the #1 star of the game Ryan Callahan took a beautiful pass from Dubinsky that split two defensemen and moved in on a semi-breakaway that resulted in a nice deke and goal. The Rangers went on to make it 4-1 thanks to a goal that was credited to Nik Zherdev which was intended to be a pass to Avery in front of the net but deflected off a Buffalo defenseman.
Best Moments of the game for me (besides the goals): - Rangers rookie Lauri Korpikoski made a great move in the first period and used his speed while killing a penalty t! o get away from the Buffalo defense and was dragged down. It led to a penalty shot being awarded. Korpikoski's shootout effort was stopped by Lalime. - Sean Avery up to his usual antics after the play: on one occasion slashing Kaleta in the back of the legs and another time grabbing Thomas Vanek's face shield and pulling on it for a second. Also, after a hit on Afinogenov it appeared that Dominic Moore wasn't happy and you could easily read Avery's lips saying "Wanna fight? Let's go! Let's go!" - Several big hits: Kaleta with a big hit on Avery in the middle of the Rangers zone that sent the two of them to the ice. Then, later on Nik Antropov laid out a huge open ice hit in the Buffalo zone that sent Kaleta's helmet flying and put Kaleta on his back. - Sean Avery on several occasions using his speed effectively to blow right by Sabres defensemen and getting good scoring chances. - The ongoing rivalry between Kaleta and Mara is definitely entertaining
Sources tell TSN Pittsburgh defenceman Sergei Gonchar suffered an apparent knee injury and will miss the next several weeks, perhaps the remainder of the season.
Gonchar was injured following a knee-on-knee collision with Capitals star Alex Ovechkin, who received a minor penalty on the play.
During a Washington power play in the first period of Game 4, Gonchar skated out from behind the Pittsburgh net and Ovechkin appeared to stick out his right knee a moment before the two collided. The Penguins defenceman was unable to put any weight on his right leg and was helped off the ice.
The National Hockey League has ruled out the notion of supplemental discipline which has prompted reaction from Gonchar's representative, JP Barry.
''We now have Exhibit A of the extreme double-standard that exists in the NHL's approach to ! discipline. Alex clearly cuts back with his knee after missing his check with devastating results. But of course, because it's Alex, its all Sergei's fault,'' Barry told TSN.
''It was a extremely negligent hit and if anyone else in this league does the same we all know they will face serious discipline,'' Barry continued. ''Part of being 'great' means playing with respect. He is wreckless and this isn't the first or last time he will get a free pass from the NHL, and the best part is he knows it.''
This move could really seal the deal for Nik Zherdev needing to buy himself a one-way ticket out of town. He certainly can play on any of the Rangers top three lines, but is likely to fill in on the second or third lines behind Gaborik.
Chris Drury's former Buffalo Sabres teammate, right wing Ales Kotalik, agrees to a deal with the Rangers, details hopefully to come.
Kotalik, 30, ended last season with the Oilers and he combined for 20 goals and 23 assists between Edmonton and Buffalo, the fourth season he has reached 20 goals. At 6-1, 227 pounds, the Czech has a bit of size, too.
According to TSN it's a 3 year deal worth $3M per season. Sounds like a pretty good contract for a player that is capable of scoring 20-25 goals. [Career Stats]
He's much bigger than I realized. But, that doesn't mean much if you don't play big. I don't know much about Kotalik, but I believe from the few times the Rangers played the Sabres that he had a rocket of a shot and sometimes played the point on the Power Play. Anyone else have any thoughts on this signing?
[Sean Avery] who's out with a sprained right knee, was off crutches and walking comfortably through the Rangers' dressing room today. He had an MRI yesterday and it "came up clean." Tomorrow, he'll go for that procedure where they inject his own blood into the tissue around the knee in an effort to speed the recovery. Avery said there's no timetable for him to begin skating again but, when I asked him if he thought he'd be able to play in the season opener, Oct. 2 at Pittsburgh, he said, quickly, "Definitely."
It certainly didn't sound good for a day or two for Avery and there were rumors that he might miss some time. If he is ready for opening night against the Penguins, but misses the final two preseason games will Tortorella throw him right in the lineup? It probably depends on how soon he gets back on the ice. ! With P.A. Parenteau getting sent down to Hartford yesterday the Rangers still have 14 forwards on their roster: Anisimov, Avery, Boyle, Brashear, Callahan, Drury, Dubinsky, Gaborik, Grachev, Higgins, Kotalik, Lisin, Prospal and Aaron Voros.
Expect one more forward to be cut before opening night. As of now, the likely scenario is Grachev getting sent down to Hartford.

Spurs are reportedly chasing Nuremberg's Slovakian midfielder Marek Mintal. The midfield flair player can operate behind the front two as an attacking-midfielder.
With Spurs in the hunt for Jermaine Jenas also, Mintal is the type of player the Tottenham midfield area has been missing for a long time. Mintal can not only create goals, but he can score a shed load of them also.
The 24 year old has always wanted to play in the Premiership, and Spurs may be his key. The transfer fee of around £3 million shouldn't be a problem either for Tottenham.
With Spurs being linked to another two midfielders in Jenas and Mintal, it wouldn't come as a surprise if the remaining central midfielders w! ere ousted from the club. Michael Brown and Sean Davis may be surplus to requirements.
German newspaper, Sueddeutsche Zeitung, has stated that Eintracht Frankfurt have tabled a bid for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Kevin-Prince Boateng.
Eintracht's manager, Friedhelm Funkel, also had a few brief words to relate to the newspaper in relation to KP Boateng.
"Kevin [Prince Boateng] is a player that I hold in high regard. I have known of his abilities for a while now".
The manager went on to add that they, Eintracht Frankfurt, are very close to agreeing a deal for our young midfielder.
"It is between the clubs to decide. I have been told by Mr. Fischer (club President) that Kevin is very interested in playing for us. I will be delighted if he [KP Boateng] can play with us from next season".
The newspaper went onto add that Boateng would be allowed to leave on a season long loan, with a view to making the move permanent.
No amount was mentioned, although the paper did say that "if the move was to become permanent, a figure below what was paid to Hertha Berlin would be accepted".
A few websites have said that Boateng is Stuttgart bound, but we have not read that in any German newspapers.
Oh well, good luck to the lad, wherever his future lays.
Boro's Chief Executive, Keith Lamb has apparently blasted Daniel Levy for bidding in the region of £6 million.
Can I ask why?
Stewart Downing is clearly not worth more. Just because Middlesbrough state that he's worth at least double that, doesn't make it so.
"It is a derisory offer! Who on earth do Spurs think they are?" blasted Boro chief executive Keith Lamb.
Mr. Lamb is a chartered accountant and a fairly astute businessman. That's why I am astounded by his remarks.
Downing clearly wants to join Tottenham Hotspur, therefore, keeping a player against his will, especially because the club in question want to make more money off his and the approaching clubs' back, is the wrong way to go.
If we are to trust reports, then Downing won't be the only left-side midfielder that Harry Redknapp wants to sign, therefore, Middlesbrough will have to sanction the sale, or risk having a player that ! just doesn't want to play for them.

L'Ascoli continua la sua risalita e aggancia l'Avellino al terz'ultimo posto. Pratica risolta nel primo tempo con i gol di Soncin e Belingheri.
Alla vigilia della semifinale di Coppa Italia con la Sampdoria, Mourinho torna sulle polemiche post Inter-Roma e attacca tutti: "La prostituzione intellettuale non mi piace. Negli ultimi due giorni non si è parlato di una Roma e di un Milan che finiranno con zero titoli, di una Juve che ha conquistato tanti punti con favori arbitrali.
